What is on the Minnesota barber exam

The Board of Barber Examiners has its own comprehensive examination. Section 154.09, as amended in 2026, sets a practical portion (a haircut and three other services) and a written portion that covers barber school subjects, state statutes and rules. The statute sets no question count or time limit, so this page gives none.

What this page practices

The statute and rule part of that written portion: chapter 154, with the 2026 changes to age, hours, waxing and grading, and Minnesota Rules chapter 2100 on sanitizers, sinks, towels and shops. Barber school theory, such as haircutting and chemistry, is not asked here.

  • Instruments are submerged for at least two minutes after each patron; clipper blades and shears may be sprayed instead (Minn. R. 2100.8100).
  • Styptic pencil and lump alum are positively prohibited (Minn. R. 2100.8100).
  • Each barber keeps at least 15 combs and ten brushes (Minn. R. 2100.8100).

Questions and answers

What score do you need to pass the Minnesota barber exam?

75 percent on the written portion. On the practical portion, 75 for the haircut and 75 for the average of the other parts, on a scale of one to 100 (section 154.09, as amended in 2026).

How many hours do you need to be a barber in Minnesota?

1,500 hours in a board-approved barber school, of which 281 are classroom hours and 1,219 practical hours, and you must be at least 17 (section 154.05, as amended in 2026).

Are these the real Minnesota barber exam questions?

No. Each was written for this page from Minnesota Statutes chapter 154, the 2026 session law that amended it and Minnesota Rules chapter 2100. Nothing comes from the examination or the Board's home study course.

What happens if you fail one part of the Minnesota barber exam?

You may retake that portion within a year of passing the other. After that year the entire comprehensive examination is retaken (section 154.09, as amended in 2026).
