How the 60 questions divide
The bulletin's outline gives general information 15 percent, licensing 25, practice requirements 45 and enforcement 15, and names the sections of Minnesota Statutes chapter 155A and the parts of Minnesota Rules chapter 2105 behind each line. The bank holds 9, 15, 27 and 9 questions in that order.
What the general theory and written practical ask
Both are written from textbooks, so neither is practiced here. For skin science, facials and hair removal theory, the Washington and California esthetician tests on this site follow published national outlines.
- Dermaplaning, microdermabrasion and extractions with lancets belong to the advanced practice license, not the esthetician license (Minn. R. 2105.0105).
- Alcohol is not a disinfecting agent in a Minnesota salon, and UV sterilizers may not be present (Minn. R. 2105.0375, 2105.0377).
- Only single-use sterile lancets may be used, and they go into a sharps container (Minn. R. 2105.0377, 2105.0375).
Questions and answers
How many questions are on the Minnesota esthetician state exam?
Thirty scored questions and five experimental ones in one hour, with 75 percent to pass, by the bulletin effective 6/5/26. The general theory examination has 85 questions and the written practical 55, each in 1.5 hours at the same pass mark.
How many hours is esthetician school in Minnesota?
600 hours at a Minnesota-licensed cosmetology school, shown on the course completion certificate, and the applicant must be at least 17 years old (Minn. R. 2105.0145). Test results may be no more than one year old when the application goes in.
What is the difference between an esthetician and an advanced practice esthetician in Minnesota?
An esthetician treats the stratum corneum. The advanced practice license reaches the epidermal layer and adds advanced exfoliation, electrical energy treatments, lymphatic drainage, advanced extractions and skin needling (Minn. R. 2105.0105). It needs its own course and two more tests.
Are these the real Minnesota esthetician exam questions?
No. Each was written for this site from a statute section or rule part that the outline lists, and links to the Revisor's text. The examination, practice products and textbooks were not used.
