How this list was compiled: Written from the North Dakota Century Code, Title 39 (Motor Vehicles): chapters 39-01 (definitions), 39-06 (operators' licenses), 39-10.2 (motorcycles) and 39-27 (motorcycle equipment), sections 39-06-14.1, 39-10.2-06, 39-27-04, 39-27-03, 39-27-05, 39-27-06, 39-27-08, 39-27-09, 39-27-10, 39-27-11, 39-27-12, 39-27-13, 39-27-15, 39-27-16, 39-27-17, 39-27-17.1, 39-27-18, 39-27-20, 39-27-21, 39-10.2-05, 39-10.2-02, 39-10.2-04, 39-10.2-03, 39-10.2-01, 39-01-01, each read in the chapter files published by the Legislative Assembly at https://ndlegis.gov/cencode/t39.html on 2026-09-30. Each question names its section and links to it in its chapter file. That a written test comes before the permit is N.D.C.C. § 39-06-14.1(2): a class M learner's permit may be issued after successful completion of a written examination, a class M endorsement follows an examination, and the director may waive the skill portion after an approved motorcycle safety course. No Department of Transportation page giving the number of questions or a pass mark for the motorcycle test could be opened on 2026-09-30 (the address tried returned 404), so neither is used. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the statute text; nothing is copied from the state's motorcycle manual, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation or another practice test.

How it works

This unofficial North Dakota motorcycle permit practice test has 53 questions from Title 39 of the Century Code, with the section under each. It covers the law only; riding technique is in the state's motorcycle manual, so study that too.

The class M permit from 14

A resident of 14 may apply for a class M learner's permit; at 14 or 15 that takes an approved motorcycle safety course. A permit holder carries no passenger and does not ride when headlights are required, and nobody under 16 rides an engine over 510 cubic centimeters (N.D.C.C. § 39-06-14.1). Helmets are required under 18 (§ 39-10.2-06).

What North Dakota law says about the test

Section 39-06-14.1 issues the class M learner's permit after a written examination and the class M license or endorsement after an examination, whose skill portion the director may waive after an approved motorcycle safety course. No Department of Transportation page with a question count or pass mark was read in September 2026, so no pass line is shown.

  • Every motorcycle needs a mirror on the handlebar, a fender over each wheel, a horn on the left handlebar and a lit speedometer (chapter 39-27).

Questions and answers

Does North Dakota have a motorcycle helmet law?

For riders under 18. Nobody under 18 may operate or ride a motorcycle without a helmet meeting federal transportation department standards, and when the operator must wear one, every passenger must too, whatever their age (N.D.C.C. § 39-10.2-06).

How old do you have to be to ride a motorcycle in North Dakota?

Fourteen for a class M learner's permit, with an approved motorcycle safety course at 14 or 15. A rider under 16 holds the permit at least two months before a class M license and stays at or under 510 cubic centimeters (§ 39-06-14.1).

Is this an official North Dakota test?

No. The ND Department of Transportation has nothing to do with this page, which is a private, unofficial practice set. Its questions were written from Title 39 of the Century Code, and each one names the section it rests on.
