What the Vermont barber exams are
Rule 4-2 asks for written and practical barbering examinations recognized by the Director. The candidate bulletin (opened October 16, 2026) lists the Barber Styling theory test and a practical of nine sections: two set-ups, haircutting, shaving with a straight razor, a blood exposure procedure, permanent waving, a predisposition and strand test, a chemical relaxer and a hair color retouch.
What this page practices
The practical as its public bulletin sets it out: times, tasks and supplies. Then Vermont's own text: scope, the routes to a license, and safety rules for razors, clippers and shops. Hair, skin and shaving theory is not asked.
On the practical only disinfectant wipes are allowed, no sprays, and nothing taken out of the kit goes back in.
Core barber training leaves out permanent waving and chemical relaxing: a barber needs documented extra training to offer them (Rule 4-1).
A licensed cosmetologist crosses over to barbering with 150 school hours or a 300-hour apprenticeship, then both barbering examinations (Rules 4-4, 9-1).
Questions and answers

How long is the Vermont barber practical exam?

The national outline has no state law part. Vermont's rules still have schools teach and test Vermont laws and rules (Rule 8-3), and shops are inspected under Part 13. For the theory outline, try the Washington barber test.
Are these the real Vermont barber exam questions?
No. Each was written for this page from the published bulletins, the Administrative Rules for Barbers and Cosmetologists, 26 V.S.A. chapter 6 and OPR's FAQs, with the source under each answer. Nothing comes from the examination or a textbook.

750 hours at a school of barbering, or an apprenticeship plan of 1,125 hours under a licensee with three years of experience, plus a high school diploma or equivalent (Rules 4-2, 9-1 and 9-3).
