How this list was compiled: Written from the Vermont Uniform Law on Notarial Acts, 26 V.S.A. chapter 103 (sections 5301 to 5380), as the Vermont General Assembly publishes it at https://legislature.vermont.gov/statutes/fullchapter/26/103 (the Vermont Statutes Online, including the actions of the 2025 session), and from the Office of Professional Regulation's Administrative Rules for Notaries Public, effective February 26, 2025, https://outside.vermont.gov/dept/sos/office_professional_regulation/professions/notary_public/notary_public_administrative_rules.pdf, both read 2026-10-14 and again 2026-10-15. A few questions restate the Office's own pages and say so in the question: its Notary FAQs, https://sos.vermont.gov/notaries-public/notary-faqs, its Stamps & Certificates page, https://sos.vermont.gov/notaries-public/stamps-certificates, and its Notary Public Application Instructions of February 2026, all read 2026-10-14 and again 2026-10-15. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the statute, the rules and the Office of Professional Regulation's pages; nothing is copied from another practice test or from the state's examination. Short quotations from the statute and the rules are marked.

What the Vermont notary exam is based on

26 V.S.A. §5341(b)(5) asks for a basic examination, approved by the Office, on the statutes, rules and ethics relevant to notarial acts. The Office's notary pages give no other outline. Chapter 103 gives 45 of the questions, the Administrative Rules 54 and the Office's pages 5.

Copies, conflicts and recordings

A Vermont notary may certify only a paper copy of an electronic record, never a photocopy of a paper one (Rule 5-1(b)). A notarial act on a record to which the notary or the notary's spouse is a party, or in which either has a direct beneficial interest, is voidable (§5362(b)). Recordings of remote acts are kept at least seven years (Rule 8-2(f)).

  • A stamp is optional. Without one, print or type your name, commission number and expiration date on the certificate (Rule 5-3(a)).
  • Chapter 103 and the Administrative Rules name no bond and no journal. A lost stamp is reported within 48 hours (Rule 5-3(d)).
  • Electronic and remote acts need the special endorsement, and the notary must be physically in Vermont for every act (§5341(d), Rule 4-4).

Questions and answers

Is there a Vermont notary exam?

Yes. 26 V.S.A. §5341(b)(5) requires one. The Office's application instructions (February 2026) call it the VT Notary Public Jurisprudence Examination and place it within the online application. Attorneys licensed and in good standing in Vermont are exempt (§5305(b)).

Are these the real Vermont notary exam questions?

No. None of the state's examination is copied here. This site is not affiliated with the Vermont Office of Professional Regulation. No commissioned Vermont notary has reviewed the answers yet.

How many questions are on the Vermont notary exam, and what score passes?

The Office's pages, read October 15, 2026, print no question count, time limit or pass mark, so this page does not guess one. An exam set here is 25 questions, scored with no pass or fail verdict.

How much can a Vermont notary charge?

Chapter 103 and the Administrative Rules set no amount for a notarial act. The fees they do set are the Office's own: $30 for a commission and $30 for the special endorsement (26 V.S.A. §5324).

How long is a Vermont notary commission good for?

Two years. The commission term runs from February 1 through January 31 of the second year (26 V.S.A. §5304(3)), which the Office's FAQ gives as January 31 of odd years. Renewal takes at least one hour of approved continuing education (Rule 9-1(a)).
