Why this is not a practice exam

The Secretary of State says every item on the state examination is based on its official study guide, which candidates may bring into the room, and that some items are scenarios. This page did not use that guide. It drills the statutes and code articles themselves.

Civil law terms on this page

An authentic act is passed before a notary and two witnesses. A donation between living persons needs one, on pain of absolute nullity. The Start from menu keeps authentic acts apart from capacity and recordation and from donations, testaments, mandate and sale.

  • Since February 1, 2026 the bond is fifty thousand dollars, filed with the secretary of state and renewed every five years (R.S. 35:71).
  • Every notarized document carries the notary identification number, or an attorney's bar roll number (R.S. 35:12).
  • A sale of an immovable is recorded within fifteen days; in Orleans Parish it is registered within forty-eight hours (R.S. 35:199).

Questions and answers

What is the Louisiana notary public exam like?

The Secretary of State describes a four-hour sitting by computer with general-knowledge and scenario-based items, all based on its official study guide, which may be brought into the room. A scaled score of 70 of 100 passes. Read October 3, 2026.

Are these Louisiana notary exam questions?

No. Nobody at this site has seen the state examination or opened the official study guide, and the site is not affiliated with the Louisiana Secretary of State. No Louisiana notary or Louisiana lawyer has reviewed the answers yet.

Who has to take the Louisiana notary exam?

A non-attorney applicant, after a pre-assessment test that has no minimum score. R.S. 35:191 dispenses with the examination for a person admitted to practice law in Louisiana or holding a valid Louisiana notarial commission.

What do the statutes charge to apply and to sit the exam?

Thirty-five dollars to file the application under R.S. 35:191, and one hundred dollars for each examination under R.S. 35:191.1, which sets the same price for the official study guide. The registration deadline is thirty days before the examination.
