How it works
This unofficial Vermont esthetician practice test asks what Vermont's sanitation and safety rules and statute say. It is not affiliated with the Vermont Office of Professional Regulation, the National-Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology (NIC) or its test administrator.

The two domains of the theory exam
The written examination Vermont recognizes follows NIC's theory outline. Its bulletin effective September 1, 2025 splits the items into Scientific Concepts, 55 percent, and Skin Care and Services, 45 percent.
What the 74 questions cover
Infection control has 30 questions, and safety, chemicals and the shop have 17, all from Part 13 of the rules, the Office's FAQ and its inspection form. Ten are on new technologies and the scope of esthetics, which the statute redefined on June 6, 2024. Seventeen are license law, which NIC's outline does not include.
- Instruments stay fully immersed in the disinfectant solution for ten minutes (Rule 13-1).
- No license under the rules covers lasers, permanent cosmetics or microblading (Rule 13-9).
- An eye wash is plumbed, or it is one 32-ounce bottle or two 16-ounce bottles (Rule 13-5).
Questions and answers
How long is the Vermont esthetician written exam?
Ninety minutes for 110 questions, 10 of which are unscored pilot questions, with a passing score of 75. Those figures are from the examination provider's bulletin for Vermont.
Is there a practical exam for a Vermont esthetician license?
Yes. Rule 6-2 asks for written and practical esthetics examinations, and the bulletin lists Practical Esthetics at 151 minutes with a passing score of 75. It is hands-on, so nothing here practices it. The bulletin lists no Vermont law test.
Does this Vermont practice test cover the whole NIC esthetics exam?
No. It asks only what Vermont's own texts state, and they are silent on NIC's anatomy, skin disorder, chemistry and facial procedure lines. For those, the Washington esthetics test on this site follows the whole outline.
Where do these Vermont esthetician questions come from?
They are this site's own, drawn from the Administrative Rules for Barbers and Cosmetologists, 26 V.S.A. chapter 6, the Director's lash and hair removal policy and the Office's FAQs. Each links to its source. NIC's examination and bulletin samples were not used.
How many hours does Vermont require for an esthetician license?
500 hours of formal training at a school of esthetics (26 V.S.A. § 276), or an Office-approved apprenticeship of 750 hours (Rule 9-1). Rule 6-2 also asks for a high-school diploma or equivalent.
