How it works
An unofficial Vermont nail technician practice test built from the Administrative Rules for Barbers and Cosmetologists and 26 V.S.A. chapter 6. Not affiliated with the Vermont Office of Professional Regulation, the National-Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology (NIC) or the examination provider.

The theory test Vermont candidates book
It is NIC's Nail Technology theory examination. Its bulletin, effective September 1, 2025, divides the items among eight domains; infection control and safety practices hold 15 percent and nail service tools 13.
How the 52 questions divide
Sixteen cover nail stations, implements, drill bits, pedicure water and screens. Twenty-three cover disinfection, blood, chemicals and the shop itself. Thirteen cover scope and license law. No Vermont text sets out nail anatomy, nail disorders, product chemistry or enhancement steps, so they are left to the national manicure theory test on this site.
- Drill bits are scrubbed with a wire brush, washed, dried and immersed for ten minutes or more (Rule 13-1(i)).
- Pedicure screens are cleaned at the end of each day; in a 10% bleach solution they soak five minutes (Rule 13-1(k)).
- Only a sterile styptic powder or liquid astringent, on a sterile single use applicator, may check bleeding (Rule 13-4(i)).
Questions and answers
How many hours do you need to be a nail tech in Vermont?
200 hours at a school of manicuring (26 V.S.A. § 276; Rule 7-1), or an Office-approved apprenticeship planned at 300 hours (Rule 9-1). The Office's application instructions do not ask nail technicians for a high school diploma.
What exams does Vermont require for a nail technician license?
Written and practical nail-technician examinations recognized by the Director (Rule 7-1). The provider's bulletin for Vermont lists Nail Technology theory, 110 questions with 10 unscored in 90 minutes, and a practical of 149 minutes, each with a passing score of 75.
Is there a Vermont state law test for nail technicians?
Neither Rule 7-1 nor the provider's bulletin names one, and NIC's outline has no state law part. The scope and license law group on this page is extra practice.
Are these the actual Vermont nail technician exam questions?
No. They are this site's own, each written from a rule, a statute section or an Office page and linked to it. Nothing is taken from an NIC examination or from the sample questions in its bulletin.
