What the Maine notary examination covers

4 M.R.S. §1923 bases it on a course of study in the laws, rules, procedures and ethics of notarial acts. The Secretary of State publishes that Course of Study: conflicts of interest, identification, the journal and stamp, four notarial acts with their certificates, fees, and remote and electronic notarization.

What Maine law sets of its own

The oath is taken before a dedimus justice within 30 calendar days of appointment (Chapter 700, section 2). No notarial act for a spouse, domestic partner, parent, sibling, child, in-law or step or half relative (§1904). A violation of §1926 is a civil violation with a fine of up to $5,000.

  • A journal is required for electronic and remote notarizations and is kept 10 years after its last entry (§1920).
  • A stamp is optional on a paper record. If used, it is rectangular or circular (Chapter 700, section 7).
  • Solemnizing a marriage takes a separate marriage officiant license (Chapter 700, section 2(4)(C)).

Questions and answers

Is there a Maine notary exam?

Yes. 4 M.R.S. §1923 requires an examination of an applicant who holds no Maine commission, and Chapter 700 requires one for renewal. The Secretary of State's resources page, read October 13, 2026, says the renewal examination is taken online.

Are these the real Maine notary exam questions?

No. The state prints its examination inside the application for a commission, and this page copies none of it. This site is not affiliated with the Maine Secretary of State. No commissioned Maine notary has reviewed the answers yet.

How many questions are on the Maine notary exam, and what score passes?

The examination printed in the application (Form ME NOT APP, 7/1/2023) has 15 questions and eight definitions to match. The Secretary of State's pages print no pass mark or time limit; the online renewal examination does not move on until an answer is correct.

How much can a Maine notary charge?

Maine sets no fee by statute, the Secretary of State's Course of Study says. Chapter 700, section 2(5)(E) has any fee disclosed in writing and agreed to by the individual before the notarial act is performed.

How long is a Maine notary commission good for?

Seven years, under 4 M.R.S. §1922(4). Renewal means a new application and the examination again; the Secretary of State's FAQ gives the application fee as $50.
