How this list was compiled: Written from the Kansas revised uniform law on notarial acts, K.S.A. 53-5a01 to 53-5a31, and the oath statutes, K.S.A. 54-101 to 54-106, as the Kansas Office of Revisor of Statutes publishes them at https://www.ksrevisor.gov/statutes/ksa_ch53.html and https://www.ksrevisor.gov/statutes/ksa_ch54.html, read 2026-10-13. Fifteen questions restate the Kansas Notary Handbook of the Office of the Secretary of State (updated July 20, 2022), https://www.sos.ks.gov/general-services/notary_public/NotaryHandbook.pdf, and four restate the Secretary of State's Notary Public page, https://sos.ks.gov/general-services/notary.html, both read 2026-10-13; each of those says so in the question. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site from the statute text and the Secretary of State's publications; nothing is copied from another practice test or from the state's examination or training course. Short quotations from the statutes and the handbook are marked.

What the Kansas notary examination covers

K.S.A. 53-5a23 bases it on a course in the laws, rules, procedures and ethics of notarial acts on electronic records. The Secretary of State's handbook ties it to in-person electronic notarization (IPEN) and remote online notarization (RON); for a remote act the notary must be located in Kansas (53-5a15).

Kansas notary rules, by section

A $12,000 surety bond, and a commission open to a resident of a bordering state who works in Kansas (53-5a22). County clerks and election commissioners are notarial officers (53-5a10). An oath begins "You do solemnly swear" (54-104). Revocation for giving legal advice bars a new commission for life (53-5a24).

  • The stamp carries the name as on the application, "notary public" and "State of Kansas"; an impression is filed before use (53-5a18).
  • The journal holds every notarial act and is kept ten years after the last one (53-5a20).

Questions and answers

Is there a Kansas notary exam?

Only for electronic work. K.S.A. 53-5a23 requires an examination before a notary's first notarial act on an electronic record. The Secretary of State's notary page, read October 13, 2026, lists no test among the steps for a regular commission.

Are these the real Kansas notary test questions?

No. This site has never seen the state's examination and is not affiliated with the Kansas Secretary of State. Every question was written from the Kansas statutes or the Secretary of State's publications. No commissioned Kansas notary has reviewed the answers yet.

How many questions are on the Kansas notary test, and what score passes?

The Secretary of State's page and handbook print no question count, time limit or pass mark, so this page gives none. The handbook says the test is free and may be retaken. A score here shows your grasp of the law, not the state's scoring.

How much can a Kansas notary charge?

The notary act sets no amount. By K.A.R. 7-43-16, as the Secretary of State's page states it, a fee is disclosed as permitted but not required, agreed to before the notarization, collected when it is performed and recorded in the journal.

How long is a Kansas notary commission good for?

Four years, under K.S.A. 53-5a22(f). It is never renewed automatically: subsection (k) has the notary qualify and apply for a new commission. The Secretary of State's page gives the application fee as $25.
