How it works
This is unofficial practice for the Kansas boating license test, on state law only, from K.S.A. chapter 32, article 11. The real course and its written examination are the ones the Secretary of Wildlife and Parks approves (K.S.A. 32-1140). Read October 2026.

Twelve and under, over 17, under 21
Kansas boating law turns on ages. A child of 12 or under wears a life jacket aboard or in tow, unless below decks or in an enclosed cabin (32-1129). An operator under 12 needs a parent or another person over 17 aboard, close enough to take control (32-1125). A tow observer is at least 12 (32-1128). Under 21, the alcohol limit is .02 (32-1131).
Questions and answers
Who needs a boating license in Kansas?
Kansas issues no boating license. K.S.A. 32-1139 asks for a boater safety education certificate from anyone born on or after January 1, 1989 who operates a motorboat or sailboat on public waters. The requirement ends at age 21.
How many questions are on the Kansas boater education exam, and what score passes?
The statutes give neither number. K.S.A. 32-1140 sets a course of at least eight hours that the Coast Guard recognizes and allows a correspondence course with a written examination. The 25-question practice exam here is this site's own length and shows no pass line.
How old do you have to be to drive a boat in Kansas?
No minimum age is written. Under 12, a parent or other person over 17 must be aboard, close enough to take control (K.S.A. 32-1125). Operators born since 1989 need the certificate until 21, or a supervisor over 17 who is certified or exempt (32-1139).
What is the alcohol limit for boating in Kansas?
.08, and .02 for an operator under 21 (K.S.A. 32-1131). Refusing the test bars a person from operating any vessel for three months. A conviction means completing a boater safety education course before operating again.
Is this the real Kansas boating test?
No. It is independent practice, not a government website, and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks has no hand in it. Every answer names a statute you can read. Navigation rules, which the course also teaches, have their own bank here.
