What the 3rd grade KAP math test covers

The KAP blueprint gives grade 3 five domains, and the 40 questions keep its shares. Measurement & Data is the largest, with 16: telling time, liters and kilograms, picture and bar graphs, line plots, area and perimeter. Operations & Algebraic Thinking has 10: multiplying and dividing within 100, unknown factors, two-step problems and patterns. Base 10 has 6: rounding, sums and differences within 1,000, and multiples of 10. Fractions has 6, with denominators 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8. Geometry has 2.

Kansas numbers its standards its own way

Under each answer is the Kansas standard it practices. Measurement & Data runs from 3.MD.1 to 3.MD.9 in the Kansas document, where area is 3.MD.8 and perimeter is 3.MD.9.

  • Kansas allows no calculator on any part of the grade 3 math test, so work each answer by hand.

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the 3rd grade KAP math test?

Kansas gives a range and no single number: each KAP subject has between 40 and 50 questions, in two sessions. This page has 40.

Is the 3rd grade KAP test timed?

No. Every KAP test is untimed. The test manual says most students finish a subject within two class sessions of 45 minutes, and a student who is making a serious attempt may be given more time.

What is a good KAP math score in 3rd grade?

Scores run from 400 to 700 in four levels. In grade 3 mathematics Level 2 begins at 510, Level 3 at 540 and Level 4 at 570. Students in Levels 3 and 4 have reached the expectations for the grade.

When is the KAP test in 2027?

The general summative window of the 2026-2027 Kansas assessment calendar opens on March 22, 2027, and closes on April 23, 2027.

Is there KAP reading practice for 3rd grade on this page?

No. Kansas third graders take KAP tests in English language arts and in mathematics, and this page is mathematics only. The state's own KAP practice tests for grades 3 to 5 are explained in its parent guide, linked under the questions.
