How this list was compiled: Outline: NSCAS Math Table of Specifications, Grade 3 (Nebraska Department of Education, version 5), https://www.education.ne.gov/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/NSCAS-Math-TOS-Grade-3_v5.pdf, linked from NSCAS Mathematics, https://www.education.ne.gov/assessment/nscas-general-summative-assessment/nscas-mathematics/, read 2026-10-12. Each question names the indicator it practices as the table prints it, from Nebraska's College and Career Ready Standards for Mathematics (2022). Only indicators the table marks for the state test are used; none of the seven marked "Assessed at the local level". Content limits (numbers up to 10,000, fraction denominators up to 12, whole numbers of 10 or less written as fractions) are from the Nebraska State Testing Program Mathematics Item Specifications, Grade 3 (draft of July 2025), https://www.education.ne.gov/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Nebraska-Grade-3-specs_Math-DRAFT.pdf, linked from the same page and read the same day. Every numeric answer is arithmetic on the numbers in the question, worked out twice. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site. Nothing is copied or reworded from an NSCAS or NeSA test, a sample or practice test of the state or its test vendor, a released item, an example in the item specifications or another practice test.
How it works
NeSA is the old name: since spring 2018 Nebraska's third graders take NSCAS mathematics. This unofficial practice follows its grade 3 table of specifications: 44 questions of our own, none the state's. Not affiliated with the Nebraska Department of Education.

What the Nebraska 3rd grade math test covers
Nebraska's table of specifications splits grade 3 into four strands, and the 44 questions keep their shares. Number is 35 to 45 percent: numbers to 10,000, and fractions as parts, on a number line, equal to each other and compared. Geometry, 20 to 30 percent, is quadrilaterals, perimeter, area, measuring to the fourth inch and time. Algebra, 15 to 20 percent, is adding and subtracting four-digit numbers and the meaning of multiplying and dividing. Data, 15 to 20 percent, is picture graphs, bar graphs and line plots.
Left to the classroom
Seven indicators carry the table's mark "Assessed at the local level", among them multiplication fact fluency and two-step problems, and are not here. The other 20 each have a question.
Nebraska's item specifications allow grade 3 fractions with denominators up to 12, so fifths, tenths and twelfths are here.
Questions and answers
Is the NeSA test still given in Nebraska?
No. A March 2018 news release of the Nebraska Department of Education says NSCAS mathematics replaced the NeSA-Math exam beginning with the spring 2018 administration, in grades 3 to 8.
What math test do 3rd graders take in Nebraska?
NSCAS mathematics, the Nebraska Student-Centered Assessment System. In the spring, all students in grades 3 to 8 take the NSCAS General tests in English language arts and mathematics.
Can you use a calculator on the Nebraska 3rd grade math test?
No. Nebraska's calculator policy for the paper version lists no calculator for grades 3 to 5. The state's NSCAS Mathematics page adds that a reference sheet is not needed for grade 3.
How is NSCAS math scored in 3rd grade?
With a scale score from 1000 to 1550 and one of three achievement levels: Developing, On Track or Advanced. The state documents read for this page give no percent to pass, so a percent here is practice only.
Where is the state's own 3rd grade NSCAS sample test?
On the Nebraska portal of the state's test vendor, which the NSCAS Mathematics page sends grades 3 to 8 to. The box under the questions has the link. None of those items is used here.
