What the Nebraska grade 5 math test covers

Nebraska's table of specifications splits grade 5 into four strands, and the 44 questions keep their shares. Number is 35 to 45 percent: decimals to thousandths, powers of 10, and all four operations with fractions and decimals. Algebra, 20 to 30 percent, is multi-digit multiplication, long division and order of operations. Geometry, 15 to 25 percent, is prisms, coordinates, unit conversions, fraction areas and volume. Data, 10 to 20 percent, is tables and line plots.

Left out on purpose

Five indicators carry the table's mark "Assessed at the local level" and are not here. The other 24 each have a question, with the code, such as 5.N.3.d, under the answer.

  • The grade 5 reference sheet prints V = lwh and the unit conversions. Learn where each one sits on the sheet.

Questions and answers

What math test do 5th graders take in Nebraska?

NSCAS mathematics. Each spring every student in grades 3 to 8 takes the NSCAS General tests in English language arts and mathematics, and grade 5 also takes science. This page practices grade 5 mathematics only.

Can you use a calculator on the NSCAS grade 5 math test?

No. Nebraska's calculator policy for the paper version lists no calculator for grades 3 to 5. Calculators begin in grade 6, on Part 1 only.

Is there a formula sheet for the Nebraska grade 5 math test?

Yes. The state's grade 5 reference sheet gives area and perimeter for rectangles and squares, V = lwh = Bh for a rectangular prism, and conversions for length, volume and weight. The NSCAS Mathematics page links to it.

How is NSCAS math scored in grade 5?

With a scale score from 1000 to 1550 and one of three levels: Developing, On Track or Advanced. The state documents read for this page give no percent to pass, so a percent here is practice only.

Where is the state's own Nebraska grade 5 math practice test?

Nebraska's NSCAS Mathematics page points grades 3 to 8 to sample tests on its test vendor's Nebraska portal, and the box under the questions has the link. The questions on this page are different ones.
