What the grade 5 math MCAS covers
The test design sorts grade 5 into five reporting categories. Number and Operations in Base Ten is the largest at 30 percent: place value, powers of 10, rounding decimals, multi-digit multiplication and division, and decimal arithmetic. Number and Operations-Fractions is 25 percent: unlike denominators, multiplying fractions and dividing with unit fractions. Measurement and Data is 20 percent, mostly unit conversions and volume. Operations and Algebraic Thinking is 15 and Geometry 10. Each share can vary by 5 points.
Standards and checks
Under each answer is the standard it practices in the 2017 Massachusetts framework, such as 5.NF.B.4b for the area of a rectangle with fraction sides. Every answer was checked a second time, and the arithmetic was worked again from the numbers given.
- Volume is new in grade 5: count unit cubes, multiply length, width and height, and add the volumes of two prisms that do not overlap.
Questions and answers
How many questions are on the grade 5 math MCAS?
The grade 5 design has 40 common questions worth 54 points: 34 worth one point, 2 worth two and 4 constructed-response questions worth four each. Six more are field test or equating questions that do not count toward the score.
Can you use a calculator on the 5th grade math MCAS?
No. Grades 3 to 6 take both sessions without a calculator. Under the state's test design, a calculator is first allowed in grade 7, and only in Session 2.
What are the MCAS achievement levels in grade 5 math?
Exceeding Expectations, Meeting Expectations, Partially Meeting Expectations and Not Meeting Expectations. A student at Meeting Expectations met grade-level expectations. A percent on this page is practice and is not one of the four levels.
Are these released MCAS grade 5 math questions?
No. All 40 were written for this site, and no released item was read to write them. The department's own released questions and practice tests are linked in the box under the questions.
