What the 5th grade math STAAR covers

The blueprint sorts the test into four reporting categories, and this page keeps their shares. Computations and Algebraic Relationships is the largest: decimals, fractions, multi-step problems and number patterns. Geometry and Measurement covers perimeter, area, volume, shapes and the coordinate plane. Numerical Representations and Relationships covers place value, primes and order of operations. The last category is data displays, taxes, income and budgets.

How the answers are checked

Each question names the TEKS student expectation it practices and whether TEA marks it a readiness or a supporting standard. Every answer was worked out again from the numbers in the question, and the explanation shows the steps.

  • Readiness standards carry most of the points, so start with decimals, fractions and multi-step problems.

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the 5th grade math STAAR test?

34, worth 42 points. The blueprint counts 26 one-point questions and 8 two-point questions that are not multiple choice. This page has 43 questions, all multiple choice.

Can you use a calculator on the 5th grade math STAAR?

No. TEA's calculator policy does not permit calculators on the mathematics tests of grades 3 to 7, unless a student is eligible for one as an accommodation.

Is there a 5th grade STAAR math printable practice test?

Yes, this one. The questions print as a sheet with an answer key, and a browser's print window can save the sheet as a PDF.

What is a passing score on the 5th grade math STAAR?

TEA reports four performance levels. Approaches Grade Level or higher counts as passing, and Did Not Meet Grade Level does not. The levels are set on a scale score, so a percent on this page is not a STAAR result.

Is this the Texas STAAR 5th grade math practice test from TEA?

No. It is unofficial practice written for this site. TEA publishes released STAAR test questions of its own, and the link is in the box under the questions.
