What the 8th grade math STAAR covers
The blueprint has four reporting categories. Computations and Algebraic Relationships, 15 to 17 questions, is slope, proportional and linear relationships, functions and equations with variables on both sides. Geometry and Measurement, 14 to 16, is the Pythagorean theorem, volume, surface area, transformations and dilations. Data Analysis and Personal Financial Literacy, 5 to 7, is scatterplots, trend lines and interest. Numerical Representations and Relationships, 2 to 4, is real numbers and scientific notation.
How the answers are checked
Each answer shows its steps and the TEKS student expectation it practices, marked readiness or supporting as TEA marks it. Every result was computed a second time. The graphs and figures of the real test are described here in words.
Readiness standards make up about 55 to 70% of the points: slope, linear equations, functions, volume, the Pythagorean theorem and transformations.
Questions and answers
How many questions are on the 8th grade math STAAR test?
40, worth 48 points: 32 one-point questions and 8 two-point questions that are not multiple choice. This page has 46 questions, all multiple choice.
Is there a STAAR 8th grade math study guide?
TEA's list of eligible TEKS for grade 8 mathematics works as one: nine pages that sort each student expectation into the four reporting categories and mark it readiness or supporting. Each question here names the expectation it practices.
Where can I find 8th grade STAAR test practice for math in Texas?
Here: 46 questions written for this site in the proportions of the blueprint. The Texas Education Agency's own released test questions are linked in the box under the questions.
Can you use a calculator on the 8th grade math STAAR?
Yes, one is required. Under TEA's calculator policy each student must have a graphing calculator through the whole grade 8 mathematics test, handheld or in the online testing platform. Grades 3 to 7 mathematics are taken without one.
What is a passing score on the 8th grade math STAAR?
A student who reaches Approaches Grade Level or higher has passed, TEA says; the two levels above it are Meets and Masters. Results are set on a scale score, so a percent on this page is practice only.
