What the 5th grade math SOL covers
The state blueprint has four reporting categories. Probability, Statistics, Patterns, Functions, and Algebra is the largest, 31 to 36% of the online test: line plots, stem-and-leaf plots, mean, median, mode, range, probability, patterns and variables. Computation and Estimation, 28 to 33%, is whole numbers, fractions, decimals and the order of operations. Measurement and Geometry is metric units, the area of a right triangle, volume, angles and triangles. Number and Number Sense is fraction and decimal equivalents and prime numbers.
How the answers are checked
Each answer names the Standard of Learning it practices, such as 5.CE.2 for adding fractions, and shows the steps. All results were calculated again from the question. Line plots and figures, which the real test draws, are put into words.
On the real test, comparing fractions and decimals, fraction sums, decimal products and quotients, and the order of operations are assessed without a calculator.

How many questions are on the 5th grade math SOL test?
The online test is computer adaptive: 36 items count toward the score and 5 more are field-test items that do not. The paper version has 45 items that count, plus 5 field-test items.
Where can I find 5th grade Virginia math SOL practice tests?
This page is one: 45 questions in the four categories of the blueprint. The Virginia Department of Education publishes SOL practice items of its own for each grade, and the box under the questions links to them.
Can you use a calculator on the 5th grade math SOL?
On part of it. Calculator-active items come with an online four-function calculator. On the online test, 7 to 11 items in Number and Number Sense and in Computation and Estimation are assessed without one.
What is a passing score on the 5th grade math SOL?
SOL tests are scored from 0 to 600. A score of 400 is the minimum for Pass/Proficient and 500 is Pass/Advanced; below 400 the levels are Fail/Basic and Fail/Below Basic. A percent here is not a scaled score.
