What the 4th grade math SOL covers
The state blueprint has four reporting categories. Computation and Estimation is the largest, 28 to 33% of the online test: whole-number sums and products, division with remainders, and adding fractions and decimals. Number and Number Sense, 25 to 31%, is place value to nine digits and comparing fractions and decimals. Measurement and Geometry, 19 to 25%, covers units, elapsed time, area, perimeter and quadrilaterals. Line graphs, probability and patterns fill the last category, 17 to 22%.
How the answers are checked
Under each answer are its steps and its Standard of Learning, such as 4.CE.3 for fractions. Each arithmetic result was worked out a second time, and definitions follow the state's instructional guide. Line graphs, which the real test draws, appear here as lists of numbers.
On the real test, comparing fractions, the facts through 12 × 12 and sums of like-denominator fractions are assessed without a calculator.
Questions and answers
How many questions are on the 4th grade math SOL test?
The online test is computer adaptive: 36 items count toward the score, and 5 field-test items do not. The paper version has 40 items that count, plus 5 field-test items.
Which SOL tests do 4th graders take in Virginia?
The state posts test blueprints for Grade 4 Reading, Grade 4 Mathematics and Virginia Studies, the grade 4 history course. This page practices the mathematics, and Virginia Studies has a practice test of its own on this site.
Can you use a calculator on the 4th grade math SOL?
On part of it. Calculator-active items come with an online four-function calculator. On the online test, 4 to 5 Number and Number Sense items and 5 to 6 Computation and Estimation items are assessed without one.
What is a passing score on the 4th grade math SOL?
Virginia reports a scaled score from 0 to 600, not a percent. 400 is the lowest Pass/Proficient score and 500 the lowest Pass/Advanced. Under 400, a student is at Fail/Basic or Fail/Below Basic.
