What the Virginia 8th grade math SOL practice test covers

More than half of the real test, 55 to 59 percent, is one reporting category: Probability, Statistics, Patterns, Functions, and Algebra. Expect multistep equations and inequalities, linear functions written as y = mx + b, domain and range, boxplots, scatterplots and dependent events. Measurement and Geometry is 23 to 25 percent: angle pairs, cones and pyramids, translations, reflections and the Pythagorean Theorem. Number, Number Sense, Computation, and Estimation is 16 to 20 percent: real numbers, square roots, discounts, tax, tips and percent change.

Standards and checks

Under each answer is its Standard of Learning, such as 8.PFA.4 for multistep equations. Every answer was checked a second time, and the arithmetic was worked again from the question's own numbers. Boxplots, scatterplots and figures are given in words.

  • In a probability question, look for the words "put back". Replacement decides whether two events are independent or dependent.

Questions and answers

Is there an 8th grade algebra SOL practice test?

The algebra on the grade 8 test is standards 8.PFA.1 to 8.PFA.5: expressions, functions, linear functions, and multistep equations and inequalities. This page has 18 questions on them. Virginia also gives a separate Algebra I SOL test with a blueprint of its own.

How many questions are on the 8th grade math SOL test?

Online, the test is computer adaptive: 44 items count toward the score and 5 more are field-test items. The paper version has 48 scored items and the same 5 field-test items.

What is a passing score on the 8th grade math SOL?

Scores run from 0 to 600. A 400 is the minimum for proficient and a 500 is advanced. Results are reported as Pass/Advanced, Pass/Proficient, Fail/Basic or Fail/Below Basic, so a percent on this page is not an SOL score.

Can you use a calculator on the 8th grade math SOL?

Yes. The blueprint says grade 8 items have the online Desmos Virginia Scientific calculator on the toolbar of the computer adaptive test.
