What the 6th grade math SOL covers

The 44 questions keep the counts of the state blueprint's four reporting categories. Probability, Statistics, Patterns, Functions, and Algebra is the largest, 16 to 18 items: circle graphs, the mean as a balance point, ratios, unit rates, one-step equations and inequalities. Measurement and Geometry, 9 to 11, is circles, triangles, parallelograms, the coordinate plane and congruence. Computation and Estimation, 8 to 10, is fractions and integers. Number and Number Sense, 7 to 9, is percents, absolute value and exponents.

How the answers are checked

Each answer names the Standard of Learning it practices, such as 6.PFA.2 for unit rates, and shows the steps. Circle graphs, number lines and figures are put into words.

  • Ordering fractions, decimals and percents, multiplying and dividing fractions, and operations with two integers are tested without a calculator. Practice them by hand.

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the 6th grade math SOL test?

Online, 44 items count toward the score and 5 field-test items do not; the test is computer adaptive. The paper version has 45 items that count, plus 5 field-test items.

Is there an online SOL practice test for 6th grade math?

This page is one: answer on screen and each answer is marked at once. The Virginia Department of Education also publishes practice items for grade 6 mathematics, and the box under the questions links to them.

Can you use a calculator on the 6th grade math SOL?

On most of it. Calculator-active items come with the Desmos Virginia Scientific calculator. On the online test, 3 to 5 number sense items and 4 to 6 computation items are assessed without one.

What is a passing score on the 6th grade math SOL?

A scaled score of 400 on the 0 to 600 scale, the minimum for Pass/Proficient. Pass/Advanced starts at 500. Under 400 the levels are Fail/Basic and Fail/Below Basic. A percent on this page cannot be turned into a scaled score.
