What the third grade math SOL covers

Virginia's blueprint sorts the test into four reporting categories, and the questions here keep their shares. Number and Number Sense is the largest: place value to six digits, comparing numbers to 9,999, fractions, and money up to $5.00. Computation and Estimation covers adding and subtracting within 1,000 and the facts through 10 × 10. Measurement and Geometry covers units, area, perimeter, time and polygons. The fourth category is pictographs, bar graphs and number patterns.

How the answers are checked

Under each answer is the Standard of Learning it practices, such as 3.NS.3 for fractions. Every answer was worked out a second time from the numbers in the question. The real test shows clocks, rulers and graphs as pictures; here they are described in words.

  • Learn the facts through 10 × 10 by heart. They sit behind the multiplication, division and area questions.
