What the 3rd grade math M-STEP covers
Michigan's blueprint counts items by claim, not by topic, and the 40 questions here use its highest counts. Concepts and Procedures, 20: multiplication and division facts, rounding, subtracting within 1,000, fractions, time, perimeter. Communicating Reasoning, 9: saying why an answer is right or what went wrong. Modeling and Data Analysis, 6: picture graphs, bar graphs, line plots and an equation for a story. Problem Solving, 5: two-step word problems.
Under each answer
The steps, then the standard from the Michigan K-12 Standards for Mathematics, such as 3.NF.3 for comparing fractions.
Questions and answers
What subjects are on the 3rd grade M-STEP?
English language arts and mathematics. Science and social studies are not tested until grade 5. This page practices the mathematics test only.
How many questions are on the 3rd grade math M-STEP?
The blueprint gives ranges by claim: Concepts and Procedures 19 to 20 items, Communicating Reasoning 7 to 9, Modeling and Data Analysis 4 to 6, and Problem Solving 3 to 5. The test is computer adaptive, so students see different questions.
Is the 3rd grade M-STEP timed?
No. The test administration manual calls M-STEP tests untimed and student-paced. To help schools plan, it estimates 1 hour 30 minutes for grade 3 mathematics.
Can 3rd graders use a calculator on the M-STEP?
No. The manual bars calculators on every item of the grade 3, 4 and 5 mathematics tests, online or on paper, even where a student's IEP or Section 504 Plan says otherwise.
What is a passing score on the 3rd grade M-STEP?
There is none: the state says M-STEP tests are not pass or fail. A result falls in one of four performance levels: Not Proficient, Partially Proficient, Proficient or Advanced.
