What the 5th grade M-STEP math test covers

Michigan's blueprint counts items by claim, not by topic, and this page uses the top of each range. Concepts and Procedures has 19 to 20 items: place value, decimals, multi-digit multiplying and dividing, fractions, unit conversions and volume. Communicating Reasoning has 7 to 9: telling why an answer must be right, or cannot be. Modeling and Data Analysis has 4 to 6: line plots, coordinates, patterns and real measurements. Problem Solving has 3 to 5: word problems with more than one step.

What a claim is

All four claims draw on the same grade 5 standards. The claim names what the student does with them: compute, solve, explain or model. Each answer here names its standard, such as 5.NF.4.

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the 5th grade M-STEP math test?

Michigan's blueprint gives a range for each claim and no single total: 19 to 20, 3 to 5, 7 to 9 and 4 to 6 items, between 33 and 40 in all. The test is computer adaptive and has no performance task.

How long is the M-STEP math test in 5th grade?

It is untimed. For scheduling, the state's Spring 2026 manual estimates 1 hour 30 minutes for the grade 5 mathematics test.

Can you use a calculator on the 5th grade M-STEP math test?

No. Michigan's manual bars calculators from every item on the grade 3, 4 and 5 mathematics tests, online or on paper. Calculators begin in grade 6.

What is a passing score on the 5th grade M-STEP?

There is none: the state says M-STEP is not pass or fail. A scale score places the student in one of four performance levels: Not Proficient, Partially Proficient, Proficient or Advanced.

What other M-STEP tests do 5th graders take?

English language arts, science and social studies. The state's Spring 2026 schedule estimates 2 hours for English language arts, 1 hour 30 minutes for science and 1 hour for social studies.
