What grade 7 M-STEP math covers

Seventh grade is the year of proportional reasoning, and the questions lean on it: unit rates of fractions, markdowns, tax and tips, and the constant of proportionality. Signed numbers come next, added, subtracted, multiplied and divided. Then come two-step equations and inequalities, circles, angle pairs, scale drawings, random samples and probability. Every answer names its Michigan standard, such as 7.RP.3.

How the questions are split

The state blueprint gives each claim a range of items, and this page takes the top of every range: 20 on Concepts and Procedures, 5 on Problem Solving, 9 on Communicating Reasoning (judge a claim, find the slip in someone's work, pick the example that breaks a rule) and 6 on Modeling and Data Analysis.

  • Grade 7 is the first year with a scientific calculator, and only on some items, so practice negative numbers and fractions by hand.

Questions and answers

How many questions does the M-STEP math test have in 7th grade?

Between 33 and 40. Michigan's blueprint fixes no total, only a range for each claim: 19 to 20 for concepts and procedures, 3 to 5 for problem solving, 7 to 9 for reasoning and 4 to 6 for modeling and data.

How long does the 7th grade M-STEP math test take?

There is no time limit: students work at their own pace. Schools plan for about 2 hours, the estimate the Spring 2026 manual gives for mathematics in grades 6 and 7. For online testing it suggests two sessions of 40 to 60 minutes.

Is a calculator allowed on the M-STEP in 7th grade?

Only where an item permits it. Online, a scientific calculator shows in the toolbar for those items and is hidden for the rest. Paper booklets have two parts: no calculator in Part 1, a handheld scientific calculator in Part 2.

What is a passing M-STEP math score for 7th grade?

There is none. The state describes the M-STEP as not pass or fail: each student's scale score falls in one of four levels, from Not Proficient through Partially Proficient and Proficient to Advanced.

Do 8th graders take the M-STEP math test?

No. The Spring 2026 manual says the M-STEP tests mathematics in grades 3 to 7, so grade 7 is the last M-STEP math test. Seventh graders also take M-STEP English language arts.
