What the M-STEP asks in grade 6 math
The blueprint gives each of four claims a range of items, and this page takes the top of each. Concepts and Procedures gets 19 to 20 items: ratios, percent, dividing fractions, decimals, common factors, expressions and one-step equations. Communicating Reasoning gets 7 to 9: saying why a claim holds, or which example breaks it. Modeling and Data Analysis gets 4 to 6: box plots, mean absolute deviation and maps on a coordinate grid. Problem Solving gets 3 to 5: word problems with more than one step.
What Michigan's standards stress in grade 6
Michigan's K-12 Standards for Mathematics name four focus areas for sixth grade: ratios and rates; dividing fractions and negative numbers; expressions and equations; and statistical thinking. All four are here, beside area, volume and nets. Each answer names its standard, such as 6.RP.3.
A calculator is allowed on some items only, so practice the fraction and decimal work by hand.
Questions and answers
How many questions are on the 6th grade M-STEP math test?
Between 33 and 40. The state publishes no fixed total, only an item range for each claim: 19 to 20, 3 to 5, 7 to 9 and 4 to 6. Each student's test is computer adaptive, and mathematics has no performance task.
How long is the M-STEP math test for 6th grade?
As long as a student needs: the M-STEP has no time limit. So that schools can plan, the Spring 2026 Test Administration Manual estimates 2 hours for sixth grade mathematics, half an hour more than for grades 3 to 5.
Can you use a calculator on the 6th grade M-STEP math test?
Only where an item allows it. Sixth graders get a basic calculator: it shows in the online toolbar on those items, and on the paper test a basic handheld is allowed in Part 2 and nothing in Part 1.
Is there a passing score on the 6th grade M-STEP?
None. The state's score guide says the tests are not pass or fail. Each report shows a scale score, placed in one of four performance levels: Not Proficient, Partially Proficient, Proficient or Advanced.
What M-STEP tests do 6th graders take?
English language arts and mathematics. The Spring 2026 timing table lists no science or social studies test for grade 6 and estimates 2 hours for each of the two tests.
