How this list was compiled: Outline: Mathematics Blueprint (8/6/2020), Kentucky Department of Education, https://www.education.ky.gov/AA/Acct/Documents/FINAL%20Mathematics%20Blueprint%2020200806.pdf, read 2026-10-13: the five grade 6 domains and the target percent of items in each. Standards: Kentucky Academic Standards for Mathematics (adopted 2019), grade 6, https://www.education.ky.gov/curriculum/standards/kyacadstand/Documents/Kentucky_Academic_Standards_Mathematics.pdf, read 2026-10-13: each question names the standard it practices and keeps to what that standard asks (unit rates with non-complex fractions, equations of the forms x + p = q and px = q, inequalities with >, <, ≥ and ≤, range and interquartile range as the measures of spread). The number of questions is that of the 2025-2026 Testing Items and Times Chart, https://www.education.ky.gov/AA/distsupp/Documents/KSA_Testing_Items_and_Times.pdf. Every calculation is worked out a second time from the numbers in the question. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site. Nothing is copied or reworded from a Kentucky Summative Assessment, a K-PREP test, a released item, a practice test of the state or another practice test, and no example of the standards document is reused. No released item or state practice test was read.

What the Kentucky state test covers in 6th grade math

This page keeps the shares of the state's mathematics blueprint. The Number System is the largest, 30 to 35 percent: dividing fractions, decimal arithmetic, negative numbers and the coordinate plane. Expressions and Equations has 25 to 30 percent: exponents, equivalent expressions, one-step equations and inequalities. Geometry and Statistics and Probability have 15 to 20 percent each, and Ratios and Proportional Relationships 10 to 15.

Three things Kentucky's grade 6 standards ask for

Turning a fraction into a decimal by long division and telling whether it ends or repeats (KY.6.NS.2). Classifying cubes, prisms, pyramids, cones and spheres (KY.6.G.4). A four-step process for statistics: question, collect, analyze, interpret (KY.6.SP.0). The grade 6 standards name no percent skill, so no question here uses percent. Each answer names its standard.

  • About a third of the real test is non-calculator, so work the fraction and decimal questions by hand.

Questions and answers

What is the Kentucky state test for 6th grade called?

The Kentucky Summative Assessment, or KSA. The state says the tests were previously called K-PREP, the Kentucky Performance Rating for Educational Progress. In 2025-2026 sixth graders took two KSA tests: reading and mathematics.

How many questions are on the 6th grade KSA math test?

40, by the state's Testing Items and Times Chart for 2025-2026. A form has 27 to 32 multiple-choice questions, 2 to 4 short-answer questions and 1 or 2 extended-response questions. The rest are multiple select or technology enhanced.

Can you use a calculator on the 6th grade KSA math test?

Only in the calculator part. The test takes 120 minutes in two parts, and Part A is non-calculator. In the other part, grades 6 to 8 get an on-screen scientific calculator.

What is a passing score on the KSA in 6th grade math?

There is no pass mark. Kentucky reports one of four performance levels: Novice, Apprentice, Proficient or Distinguished. A percent on this page is practice only and is not one of those levels.
