Each question names the indicator it practices as the table prints it, from Nebraska's College and Career Ready Standards for Mathematics (2022). Only indicators the table marks for the state test are used; none of the six marked "Assessed at the local level". Every numeric answer is arithmetic on the numbers in the question, worked out a second time. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site. Nothing is copied or reworded from an NSCAS or NeSA test, a sample or practice test of the state or its test vendor, a released item, an example in the item specifications or another practice test. No sample test item was read.

The five strands of grade 6 NSCAS math

The state's grade 6 table of specifications weights five strands, and the questions here sit inside every range. Number, at 20 to 30 percent, covers factors and multiples, prime factorization, absolute value, and dividing decimals and fractions. Algebra has the same weight: expressions, one-step equations and inequalities. Ratios and Proportions, 15 to 25 percent, covers percents, unit rates, ratio tables and the coordinate plane. Geometry and Data each get 10 to 20 percent: nets, area, surface area and prism volume; plots, measures of center and probability.

36 indicators, one by one

Six indicators are marked "Assessed at the local level" and are left out. Every other indicator, 36 in all, has a question, and the code under each answer, such as 6.R.1.c, says which.

  • Division, prime factorization and order of operations come as bare numbers: the item specifications give those items no real-world context.
  • In probability items the specifications call a die a number cube labeled 1 to 6.

Questions and answers

What replaced the NeSA math test for 6th graders?

NSCAS mathematics. A Nebraska Department of Education news release of 22 March 2018 says it replaces the NeSA-Math exam in grades 3 to 8, beginning with that spring's test.

Do 6th graders get a calculator on NSCAS math?

A four-function one, and only for the first questions of Part 1 on the paper version; after that the calculators are collected. The same policy gives grades 3 to 5 no calculator and grades 7 and 8 a scientific one.

What is on the grade 6 NSCAS math reference sheet?

Area formulas for the triangle, rectangle, square, trapezoid and parallelogram, the volume and surface area of rectangular and triangular prisms, and conversions for length, volume and weight. The grade 6 sheet has no circle formulas.

What do grade 6 NSCAS math scores look like?

A scale score from 1000 to 1550 and one of three achievement levels: Developing, On Track or Advanced. No percent to pass appears in the state documents this page was written from, so a percent here is only practice.

Does Nebraska publish a grade 6 NSCAS math sample test?

Yes, through the portal of its test vendor, which the NSCAS Mathematics page links for grades 3 to 8. The link is in the box under the questions, and this page uses none of those items.
