How this list was compiled: Outline: Mathematics Blueprint (8/6/2020), Kentucky Department of Education, https://www.education.ky.gov/AA/Acct/Documents/FINAL%20Mathematics%20Blueprint%2020200806.pdf, read 2026-10-13: the five grade 5 domains and the target percent of items in each. Standards: Kentucky Academic Standards for Mathematics (adopted 2019), grade 5, https://www.education.ky.gov/curriculum/standards/kyacadstand/Documents/Kentucky_Academic_Standards_Mathematics.pdf, read 2026-10-13: each question names the standard it practices and keeps to what that standard asks (decimals through the thousandths place, multiplication no larger than four digits by two digits, dividends of up to four digits by two-digit divisors, division only of unit fractions by whole numbers and whole numbers by unit fractions, the first quadrant of the coordinate plane, bar graphs, pictographs and dot plots as the data displays). The number of questions on the real test is from the 2025-2026 Testing Items and Times Chart, https://www.education.ky.gov/AA/distsupp/Documents/KSA_Testing_Items_and_Times.pdf. Every calculation is worked out a second time from the numbers in the question. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site. What KSA grade 5 math covers

Base ten and fractions carry at least half of the test. Kentucky's blueprint gives Number and Operations in Base Ten and Number and Operations, Fractions 25 to 30 percent each: decimals to thousandths, powers of 10, long multiplication and division, and adding, subtracting and multiplying fractions. Operations and Algebraic Thinking has 15 to 20 percent; Measurement and Data and Geometry have 10 to 15 each.

Three things Kentucky's grade 5 standards ask for

Telling a categorical question from a numerical one and choosing a bar graph, pictograph or dot plot for the data (KY.5.MD.2). Finding the rule of a growing pattern (KY.5.OA.3). Dividing with fractions only as far as unit fractions and whole numbers (KY.5.NF.7). Every answer on this page names its standard.

  • On the real test 60 to 70 percent of the grade 5 items are non-calculator, so work each question by hand first.

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the KSA grade 5 math test?

39, by the state's Testing Items and Times Chart for 2025-2026. A form has 24 to 31 multiple-choice questions, 2 or 3 short-answer questions and 1 or 2 extended-response questions; the rest are multiple select or technology enhanced. This page has 40.

How long is the KSA math test in 5th grade?

120 minutes, in two parts; Part A is the non-calculator part. Kentucky's 2026 testing window ran from April 13 to June 5.

Can 5th graders use a calculator on the KSA?

Only in the calculator part, where grades 3 to 5 get an on-screen four-function calculator. A student with a calculator accommodation may have it in both parts.

What is a passing score on the grade 5 KSA math test?

Kentucky sets no percent to pass. A student gets a scale score and one of four performance levels: Novice, Apprentice, Proficient or Distinguished. A percent on this page is practice only.

What other KSA tests do 5th graders take?

In 2025-2026: reading, social studies, editing and mechanics, and on-demand writing. The state says the KSA will no longer test writing or editing and mechanics from 2026-2027, and the other tests stay the same.
