How this list was compiled: Outline: Mathematics Blueprint (8/6/2020), Kentucky Department of Education, https://www.education.ky.gov/AA/Acct/Documents/FINAL%20Mathematics%20Blueprint%2020200806.pdf, read 2026-10-13: the five grade 8 domains and the target percent of items in each. Standards: Kentucky Academic Standards for Mathematics (adopted 2019), grade 8, https://www.education.ky.gov/curriculum/standards/kyacadstand/Documents/Kentucky_Academic_Standards_Mathematics.pdf, read 2026-10-13: each question names the standard it practices and keeps to what that standard asks (systems solved by substitution where a variable has a coefficient of 1 or by inspection, no function notation, both volume and surface area for cones, cylinders and spheres, scatter plots and lines of fit as the whole of grade 8 statistics). The number of questions is that of the 2025-2026 Testing Items and Times Chart, https://www.education.ky.gov/AA/distsupp/Documents/KSA_Testing_Items_and_Times.pdf. Every calculation is worked out a second time from the numbers in the question. Licence: Own work. Questions, answer choices and explanations were written for this site. Nothing is copied or reworded from a Kentucky Summative Assessment, a K-PREP test, a released item, a practice test of the state or another practice test, and no example of the standards document is reused. No released item or state practice test was read.

What KSA grade 8 math covers
Three domains carry most of the test. Expressions and Equations, Functions, and Geometry each have 25 to 30 percent of Kentucky's blueprint: exponents and scientific notation, slope, linear equations and systems, rate of change, transformations, the Pythagorean Theorem and solids. The Number System and Statistics and Probability have 10 to 15 percent each: irrational numbers and scatter plots.
Three things Kentucky's grade 8 standards say
KY.8.G.9 asks for the surface areas of cones, cylinders and spheres as well as their volumes. KY.8.EE.8 solves systems by substitution or by inspection and says elimination is not required. Function notation is not required either (KY.8.F.1), so no question here writes f(x). Each answer names its standard.
Between 20 and 25 percent of the real grade 8 test is non-calculator; the exponent and square-root questions are good ones to do by hand.
Questions and answers
How many questions are on the KSA grade 8 math test?
40, on each of seven test forms in 2025-2026. The state's chart lists 27 to 34 multiple-choice questions, 2 or 3 short-answer and 1 or 2 extended-response questions per form, with multiple-select and technology-enhanced questions making up the rest.
How long does the 8th grade KSA math test take?
120 minutes in two parts, the first of them without a calculator. The 2026 window opened April 13 and closed June 5.
Can you use a calculator on the 8th grade KSA math test?
Yes, in the calculator part: an on-screen scientific calculator for grades 6 to 8. A calculator of the wrong type for the grade is prohibited, the policy says.
Is there a passing score for KSA math in 8th grade?
No percent is published. Results come as a scale score and one of four performance levels, from Novice through Apprentice and Proficient to Distinguished. Scores on this page are for practice only.
What other KSA tests do 8th graders take?
Reading, social studies, editing and mechanics, and on-demand writing in 2025-2026. Kentucky says the two writing tests end with that year and the others remain.
