What the grade 8 NJSLA math test covers

New Jersey's blueprint gives three reporting categories a least and a most out of 43 items, and this page stays inside each range. Expressions and Equations and the Number System has 15 questions: exponents, radicals, scientific notation, slope, linear equations and systems. Geometry has 15: transformations, congruence and similarity, angle facts, the Pythagorean Theorem and volume. Functions and Statistics and Probability has 13: linear functions, scatter plots, lines of fit and two-way tables. Each answer names its standard, such as 8.EE.C.7b.

Two New Jersey lines

New Jersey's 2023 standards hold two grade 8 lines the Common Core does not: simplifying square roots (8.EE.A.2b) and sums and products of rational and irrational numbers (8.NS.A.3). Both are practiced here.

  • Students must know the volume formulas for the cylinder, the cone and the sphere; the answers here are left in terms of π.
