What is on the grade 8 test

Equations and geometry carry the test. NYSED's educator guide sets each of those two domains at 28 to 41 percent of the questions and functions at 16 to 25. Scatter plots get 4 to 11 percent and irrational numbers 2 to 9. Two grade 8 topics, scientific notation and systems of two equations, are taught in May and June after testing, so none appear here. Circles, angle pairs, trapezoids and triangle side lengths from late grade 7 are tested in grade 8, and four questions cover them.

Under each answer

The explanation works the problem line by line, and the standard code follows it, for example NY-8.G.7 on a Pythagorean Theorem question. Every result was computed a second time.

  • Grade 8 students may use a scientific calculator in both sessions, and the reference sheet prints the volume formulas for cylinders, cones and spheres.

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the NYS math exam in grade 8?

The grade 8 design has 48: 38 multiple choice and 10 constructed response. Day one is 32 multiple-choice questions, some of them unscored field test questions. Day two has the last 6 multiple-choice questions and all the constructed-response ones.

How should 8th grade NYS math test practice be timed?

Loosely. The real test has no time limit; a student may work for as long as the school day allows. NYSED's estimate for grade 8 is 80 to 90 minutes on day one and 75 to 85 on day two.

Are calculators allowed on the grade 8 New York State math test?

Yes, in both sessions: a scientific calculator, never a graphing one. Students who test on a computer also get a calculator inside the testing program. A ruler, a protractor and the grade 8 reference sheet are part of the test too.

Where are the state's own NYS math exam practice test questions for grade 8?

NYSED releases questions from past grades 3 to 8 tests; the link is in the box below the questions. Nothing on this page comes from those releases. These 48 questions are original practice in the same domains.

What do the four levels on the grade 8 math score report mean?

Level 1 is below proficient, Level 2 partially proficient, Level 3 proficient and Level 4 excelling. In 2026 a grade 8 mathematics scale score of 450 to 481 was Level 3. A percent on practice questions is not a scale score.
