What is on the grade 6 test
Expressions, Equations, and Inequalities is the largest domain: NYSED's educator guide gives it 25 to 43 percent of the questions. Ratios and Proportional Relationships gets 21 to 30 percent, The Number System 17 to 26 and Geometry 14 to 24. Statistics and probability are taught in May and June, after testing, so none appear here. Two grade 5 topics taught late, the order of operations and points on a coordinate grid, are tested in grade 6, and one question covers each.
Under each answer
Each explanation shows the steps, then the code of the standard it practices, such as NY-6.RP.3c for percents. All arithmetic was run a second time by a separate calculation.
Session 1 allows no calculator in grade 6, so work the fraction and decimal questions on paper.
Questions and answers
How many questions are on the NYS math grade 6 test?
The grade 6 design has 46: 36 multiple choice and 10 constructed response. Day one is 30 multiple-choice questions, some of them unscored field test questions. Day two has 6 more multiple-choice questions and every constructed-response one.
Is the NYS 6th grade math test still Common Core?
It measures New York's Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards, the state's 2017 revision of the Common Core standards it adopted in 2011. The questions here are written to the Next Generation standards and carry their codes, such as NY-6.EE.7.
Can 6th graders use a calculator on the New York State math test?
Only in Session 2: a scientific calculator or a four-function one that has a square root key, never a graphing calculator. Session 1 allows none. Each student also has a ruler, a protractor and the grade 6 reference sheet in both sessions.
How long does the 6th grade NYS math test take?
It is untimed: a student may keep working for as long as the school day allows. NYSED's planning estimate for grade 6 is 80 to 90 minutes for Session 1 and 75 to 85 for Session 2.
What score is proficient on the grade 6 math test?
Level 3 of the four levels. In 2026 a grade 6 mathematics scale score of 450 to 484 was Level 3, and 485 to 509 was Level 4. A percent on practice questions is not a scale score.
