What the Maryland 6th grade math test covers
The grade 6 blueprint sets 35 scored items in three subclaims, worth 45 points in all, and each of the 45 questions here stands for one point. Content is 23 one-point items: 8 on the number system, 8 on expressions and equations, 3 on ratios, 2 on geometry and 2 on statistics. Reasoning is 6 items worth 11 points: checking a chain of steps, finding an error, testing a claim. Modeling is 6 items worth 11 points: what a real problem needs, how to set it up and what its answer means.
Common Core codes
Each content answer names its Maryland standard by its Common Core code, such as 6.RP.A.3. Reasoning and modeling answers name an evidence statement, such as 6.R.1a.
Maryland's statistics items leave out mode and range: know the mean, the median and the interquartile range.
Questions and answers
Is the Maryland 6th grade math test a Common Core test?
It is MCAP, which tests the Maryland College and Career Ready Standards on Maryland's own blueprint. Those grade 6 standards carry the same 29 codes as the Common Core State Standards, and the three ratio standards read the same in both.
How many questions are on the grade 6 MCAP math test?
Thirty-five that count, worth 45 points. Four of them are written answers, two in reasoning and two in modeling, scored after the test ends.
How long is the MCAP math test for 6th grade?
Up to 160 minutes: the state's sheet on computer-adaptive testing gives four sections and up to 40 minutes for each. Sixth graders take the test late in the school year.
Can 6th graders use a calculator on MCAP math?
On some items. Online, a four-function calculator with square root and percent keys appears on the items that allow one. On the paper test for grades 6 to 8, section 1 is non-calculator and sections 2, 3 and 4 allow one.
Where is Maryland's own MCAP practice test for grade 6 math?
The state posts one on its MCAP portal: open Practice Tests, choose Mathematics, then Grade 6. The facts box on this page links to the portal, and no question here comes from that test.
