What the grade 3 MCAP math test covers

Maryland's blueprint has 35 scored items in three subclaims, worth 43 points, and this page has a question for each point. Content is 23 one-point items: 7 on multiplying and dividing, 7 on fractions, 5 on measurement, 2 on base ten and 2 on geometry. Reasoning is 6 items worth 10 points: finding a flaw, testing a claim, explaining a picture. Modeling is 6 items worth 10 points: deciding what a real problem asks, what information it needs and whether a solution works.

Three Maryland limits

The state's evidence statements keep grade 3 fractions to the denominators 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8, time problems to intervals of 60 minutes or less, and products to the 10 by 10 table.

  • Four items on the real test are answered in writing and scored by people: two on reasoning and two on modeling, 3 points each.

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the grade 3 MCAP math test?

35 scored items, by Maryland's blueprint: 23 on content, 6 on reasoning and 6 on modeling. Thirty-one are machine scored and four are written answers scored by people.

How long is the MCAP math test for 3rd grade?

The state says the mathematics tests have four sections and students have up to 40 minutes for each. Grades 3 to 8 are tested late in the school year.

Can 3rd graders use a calculator on MCAP math?

On some items. Online, a four-function calculator appears on the items that allow one. On the paper test for grades 3 to 5, sections 1 and 3 are non-calculator and sections 2 and 4 allow one.

What is a passing score on the MCAP?

MCAP reports a scale score and one of four performance levels: Beginning Learner, Developing Learner, Proficient Learner or Distinguished Learner. It is not a percent, so a percent on this page is practice only.

Where is Maryland's own MCAP practice test for grade 3 math?

On the state's MCAP portal, under Practice Tests. The state also has a public release site with questions from past tests. The box under the questions links to the portal. The questions on this page are different ones.
