What the grade 4 NJSLA math test covers

New Jersey's blueprint sets a range of items for four reporting categories, and this page stays inside each. Number and Operations - Fractions has 12 questions: equivalent fractions, comparing, adding and subtracting with like denominators, a fraction times a whole number, and decimals to hundredths. Operations and Algebraic Thinking & Measurement has 12: multi-step word problems, factors, primes, patterns, units, area and angles. Number and Operations in Base Ten has 11: place value, rounding and multi-digit arithmetic. Geometry and Data Literacy has 6.

The standard under each answer

Each answer shows its steps and names its New Jersey standard, such as 4.NF.B.4. In the 2023 standards measurement is coded 4.M and data literacy 4.DL.

  • The standards keep grade 4 fractions to denominators 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 100.

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the grade 4 NJSLA math test?

41 items, by New Jersey's blueprint. The test is adaptive, so the blueprint gives each reporting category a least and a most: 11 to 14 items on fractions, for example, and 6 to 8 on geometry and data literacy.

How long is the NJSLA math test in grade 4?

150 minutes. The state's testing times page lists two mathematics sessions of 75 minutes each.

Does New Jersey have its own NJSLA practice test for grade 4 math?

Yes, free and online, on its assessments portal: choose Practice Tests, then a guest session and the grade. The state says the main purpose is getting used to the testing tools. The box under the questions links to the portal.

Is there a passing score on the NJSLA?

A family's report shows an achievement level, which tells whether the student meets the expectations for the grade, and results by reporting category. It is not a percent, so a percent on this page is practice only.
