What the 4th grade math MCAS covers
The test design gives five reporting categories. Fractions has the largest share, 30 percent: equivalent fractions, adding and subtracting with like denominators, multiplying by a whole number, and decimals. Operations and Algebraic Thinking, Base Ten, and Measurement and Data have 20 percent each, and Geometry has 10. Each share can vary by 5 points.
Standards and checks
Every question lists its standard in the 2017 Massachusetts framework, such as 4.NF.B.3. The answers are plain arithmetic on the numbers given, recomputed once, and the steps sit under each one.
Questions and answers
How many questions are on the 4th grade math MCAS?
40 questions count, for 54 points: 34 one-point questions, 2 two-point questions and 4 constructed-response questions worth 4 points each. Students also answer a few field test and equating questions that do not count.
Can you use a calculator on the grade 4 math MCAS?
No. The test has two sessions, and the state's test design allows no calculator in either session for grades 3 to 6.
How is the MCAS grade 4 math test scored?
Results fall into four achievement levels: Exceeding Expectations, Meeting Expectations, Partially Meeting Expectations and Not Meeting Expectations. This page gives a percent, which is not an MCAS result.
Which fractions are on the grade 4 MCAS math test?
The Massachusetts framework limits grade 4 fraction work to the denominators 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 100. Adding fractions with unlike denominators is not required in this grade, apart from tenths and hundredths.
Are these released MCAS questions?
No. They were written for this site and none is a released item. The department posts released questions and practice tests of its own, and the box under the questions links to them.
