What the New York State grade 5 math test covers

The blueprint in NYSED's educator guide gives fractions the largest share, 34 to 44 percent, then base ten numbers and decimals, 25 to 35, measurement and volume, 22 to 32, and geometry, 2 to 7. Order of operations, patterns and the coordinate plane are taught after the test and assessed in grade 6, so this page leaves them out.

Checking an answer

Each question names the standard it practices, such as NY-5.NF.4a, and the explanation shows the steps. The arithmetic was done twice from the numbers in the question.

  • No calculator is allowed in grade 5, so work every question with pencil and paper.
