What the NY State 3rd grade math test covers

The blueprint in NYSED's educator guide gives Operations and Algebraic Thinking the largest share, 31 to 43 percent: multiplying and dividing within 100, two-step word problems and patterns. Measurement and Data has 21 to 32 percent (time, liquid volume, mass and area), fractions 18 to 29, base ten 7 to 14 and geometry 2 to 8. Graphs, line plots, perimeter and sorting shapes are taught after the test and assessed in grade 4, so this page leaves them out.

Checking an answer

Each question names its standard, such as NY-3.OA.8a, and shows the steps. Fractions use only halves, thirds, fourths, sixths and eighths, the denominators the grade 3 standards allow.

  • No calculator is allowed in grade 3, so work each question with pencil and paper.

Questions and answers

Is the NY State 3rd grade math test taken online?

Under NYSED's plan, yes. Its June 2022 memo required computer-based testing in grades 5 and 8 from spring 2024 and in every grade from 3 to 8 from spring 2026. On a computer the ruler is a tool on the screen.

How many questions does the 3rd grade NYS math test have?

It has 38, split across two days. Day one is Session 1, with 25 multiple-choice questions; some are field test questions that do not count. Day two is Session 2: 5 multiple-choice questions, then 8 constructed-response questions worth 1 to 3 credits each.

Is there a time limit on the 3rd grade NY math test?

No. A student may keep working as long as needed during the regular school day. For planning, NYSED's guide gives third grade averages of about 55 to 65 minutes for the first session and 60 to 70 for the second.

Are there NYS math grade 3 practice tests from the state?

NYSED posts released questions from past tests, linked in the box under the questions, and a Question Sampler that previews the computer testing tools. This page is separate from both, and its questions are unofficial.

What score is proficient on the NYS grade 3 math test?

Level 3 of the four performance levels means proficient. For third grade mathematics in 2026 it covered scale scores from 450 to 486, and Level 4 began at 487. The percent shown on this page is not a scale score.
