What the 3rd grade LEAP math test covers

Major Content earns 27 of the 52 points, in four parts: multiplying and dividing within 100; word problems with any of the four operations; fractions on a number line and equivalent fractions; and time, mass, liquid volume and area. Additional & Supporting Content, 9 points, is rounding, adding and subtracting within 1,000, bar graphs, perimeter, money and shapes. Mathematical Reasoning & Modeling, 16 points, asks a student to explain, find a mistake or solve a problem of three or more steps.

How the answers are checked

Each answer shows its working and names the Louisiana standard or LEAP evidence statement behind it: 3.OA.C.7 for multiplication facts, 3.NF.A.3 for equivalent fractions. Every result was computed a second time from the numbers in the question.

  • By the end of grade 3 the standards expect every product of two one-digit numbers from memory, so practice the facts without counting.

Questions and answers

Is this a mathematics practice test for the 3rd grade LEAP?

Yes, an unofficial one. Of its 44 questions, 28 are on Major Content, 8 on Additional & Supporting Content and 8 on reasoning and modeling. The real test scores reasoning and modeling as written answers; here every question is multiple choice.

How many questions are on the 3rd grade LEAP math test?

37 tasks count, for 52 points, and 3 to 5 field-test tasks do not. The test has three sessions of 65 minutes each.

Can 3rd graders use a calculator on the LEAP math test?

No. Louisiana allows no calculator on a mathematics test in grades 3 through 5. A student with an approved accommodation is given a four-function calculator for all three sessions.

Is there a reference sheet for 3rd grade LEAP math?

No. The guide says grade 3 students have no reference sheet, because the grade 3 standards do not require one. The online test has a ruler marked in quarter inches, and the test administrator hands out scratch paper.

Is this the LEAP 2025 math practice test for grade 3?

No. LEAP 2025 is the name on the state's own grade 3 math practice test and answer key, on its practice tests page; the box under the questions links there. No question here is taken from it.
