What the 5th grade LEAP math test covers

Major Content earns 27 of the 52 points and has four parts: decimals; fraction problems; fractions as division, place value and scaling; and volume with multi-digit multiplication and division. Additional & Supporting Content, 9 points, is expressions, number patterns, unit conversions, line plots, the coordinate plane and classifying shapes. Mathematical Reasoning & Modeling, 16 points, asks a student to explain, find an error or solve a problem of three or more steps.

How the answers are checked

Under each answer is the Louisiana standard or LEAP evidence statement it practices, such as 5.NF.B.7 for dividing with unit fractions, and the working. Each result was computed a second time from the numbers in the question.

  • The grade 5 test allows no calculator in any session, so do every question here by hand.

How many questions are on the 5th grade LEAP math test?

37 tasks count, for 52 points, and 3 to 5 field-test tasks do not. There are three sessions of 65 minutes. Exam mode here asks 37 of the 44 questions in 195 minutes.

Can you use a calculator on the 5th grade LEAP math test?

No. Louisiana allows no calculator on a mathematics test in grades 3 through 5. A student with an approved accommodation is given a four-function calculator for all three sessions.

What is on the LEAP grade 5 math reference sheet?

Conversions for miles, pounds, tons, cups, pints, quarts, gallons and liters, and the volume formulas for a right rectangular prism. Not on it: inches to feet, feet to yards, metric and time units, and the area and perimeter of a rectangle. Students must know those.
