How it works
Forty-two unofficial questions for Tennessee's grade 3 TCAP math test, which many families still call TNReady. Each was written for this page from the state's grade 3 standards. This site is not affiliated with the Tennessee Department of Education.

What third graders are tested on
Measurement and geometry make up the biggest part of the grade 3 blueprint, 35 to 43 percent of items: telling time, counting money, mass and liquid volume, bar graphs and line plots, area, perimeter and sorting shapes. Whole number computation is next at 22 to 30 percent: multiplication and division facts, rounding, and sums and differences within 1,000. Fractions get 15 to 20 percent, and so does the category for multiplication properties, two-step problems and patterns.
Reading the explanations
Each explanation walks through the steps in plain words and is followed by its standard, such as 3.NF.A.3d for comparing fractions. Many wrong choices are what a common slip gives: adding when the problem multiplies, or finding perimeter in place of area.
- No calculator is allowed on Subpart 1, the longest part, so knowing the multiplication facts by heart saves the most time.
Questions and answers
Is a TNReady practice test for 3rd grade math the same as TCAP practice?
Yes. TCAP, the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program, is the name on the state's blueprint. TNReady is another name many people use, and it is still in the web addresses of the state's testing pages. Both mean the same grade 3 math test.
How many questions does the 3rd grade TCAP math test have?
Between 43 and 53 items, split over three subparts. Only 37 to 42 are scored; the others are field test items mixed in. Every item is worth one point with no partial credit, and all are multiple choice or multiple select.
How long should a TN Ready grade 3 math practice test take?
The real test allows 110 minutes: 50 for Subpart 1 and 30 each for Subparts 2 and 3. Exam mode here gives the same 110 minutes for its 42 questions.
Do 3rd graders get a calculator on TCAP math?
Only on Subparts 2 and 3, and only a four-function one. The state's guidance keeps calculators with fraction functions out of grades 3 to 5, because students are still learning fractions.
Is the grade 3 TCAP math test on paper or on a computer?
On paper. Grade 3 uses a test booklet that students write their answers in directly. Grades 4 and 5 use a booklet with a separate answer document.
