What the grade 4 test covers

This is 4th grade math standardized test practice for New York State, split as the blueprint in NYSED's educator guide splits the test: whole numbers in base ten, 20 to 30 percent; fractions, 20 to 30; operations and algebraic thinking, 15 to 25; geometry, 13 to 23; measurement and data, 9 to 14. Decimals and unit conversions are taught after the test and assessed in grade 5, so they are left out.

Fractions the grade 4 way

New York limits grade 4 fractions to the denominators 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 100, and this page keeps to them. Under each answer is its standard, such as NY-4.NF.3c.

  • Geometry is 13 to 23 percent of the grade 4 test, against 2 to 8 in grade 3. Know angles, triangle names and symmetry.

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the New York State math test in grade 4?

No. Students get as much time as they need within the school day. For grade 4 the educator guide estimates 65 to 75 minutes for each of the two sessions.

What can a 4th grader use on the NYS math test?

A ruler and a protractor, in both sessions. Calculators are not permitted in grades 3 to 5, and the mathematics reference sheet starts in grade 5, so a fourth grader has none.

No. It is unofficial, and the questions were written for this site. NYSED posts released questions from past grades 3 to 8 tests, and the box under the questions links to them.

What score is proficient on the grade 4 math test?

The state reports four performance levels on a scale score. In 2026, Level 3, which means proficient, ran from 450 to 485 in grade 4 mathematics. A percent on practice questions cannot be turned into a level.
