What the grade 4 MCAP math test covers

Maryland's blueprint has 35 scored items worth 43 points, and this page has a question for each point. Content is 23 one-point items: 10 on fractions, 5 on base ten, 4 on operations and algebraic thinking, 3 on measurement and 1 on geometry. Reasoning and modeling have 6 items and 10 points each: finding a flaw, testing a claim, choosing what a real problem needs, judging a solution.

Limits Maryland sets for grade 4

The state's evidence statements keep fractions to the denominators 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 100, whole numbers to 1,000,000 and division to one-digit divisors. Unit conversions go only from a larger unit to a smaller one.

Questions and answers

How many questions are on the grade 4 MCAP math test?

35 scored items, by Maryland's blueprint. Four of them, two in reasoning and two in modeling, are written answers worth 3 points each.

How long is the MCAP math test in 4th grade?

Maryland's sheet on computer-adaptive testing says the math tests have about 35 questions in four sections, with up to 40 minutes for each section. Each question must be answered before the next one appears.

Is a calculator allowed on the grade 4 MCAP?

On the items that allow one, the online test supplies a four-function calculator with square root and percent keys. On the paper test for grades 3 to 5, sections 2 and 4 are calculator sections and sections 1 and 3 are not.

What is a passing score on the grade 4 MCAP?

There is no percent to pass. Maryland reports a scale score and one of four performance levels: Beginning Learner, Developing Learner, Proficient Learner or Distinguished Learner.

Does Maryland have its own MCAP practice test for grade 4 math?

Yes. The state's MCAP portal has practice tests, and its public release site has questions from past tests. The questions on this page are different ones, written for this site.
