What 6th grade science covers in Louisiana
Louisiana gives grade 6 science nineteen performance expectations, and each has at least two questions here. Physical science is the largest part: atoms and molecules, forces, Newton's third law, electric and magnetic forces, gravity, fields, kinetic and potential energy, and waves. Earth and space science covers seasons, eclipses, gravity in the solar system, the scale of solar system objects, and human use of resources. Life science covers cells, resources and populations, interactions among organisms, and the path of matter and energy.
How LEAP asks it
On the real test a short account of an event, with a table, graph or picture, comes before most questions, and some answers are written out. Here every question has four choices and needs no picture.
Investigate asks how to plan a fair test, Evaluate asks what data show, and Reason Scientifically asks for a model or an explanation.
Questions and answers
Is 6th grade science tested on LEAP?
Yes, in 2026-2027, when each grade from 3 to 8 takes its own LEAP science test. That is grade 6's last year. In 2027-2028 only grades 4 and 7 test, and from 2028-2029 the grade 7 test includes content from grades 5 through 7.
How long is the 6th grade LEAP science test?
Three timed sessions of 65 minutes, 195 minutes in all. Five item sets, one task and twelve standalone items are worth 58 points. Field-test questions are mixed in and do not count toward the score.
Is this the state's grade 6 LEAP science practice test?
No. This page is unofficial, and all 42 questions are our own. The Louisiana Department of Education has a LEAP grade 6 science practice test of its own and lists its answer key on the practice tests page, linked under the questions.
When is the LEAP test in 2027?
The window for computer-based LEAP tests opens April 1, 2027, and runs through May 12, 2027. Each school's own schedule comes from its school or district test coordinator.
What score do you need on LEAP science?
LEAP reports one of five achievement levels: Unsatisfactory, Approaching Basic, Basic, Mastery and Advanced. The guide defines Mastery as meeting expectations and gives no percent, so a score on this page is for practice only.
