What the grade 6 LEAP social studies test covers
Grade 6 opens with Europeans claiming North America and closes with the Constitution ratified. The state's guide reports it in three content categories: Colonial America and Louisiana, which takes in Jamestown, Plymouth, the colonial regions and French and Spanish Louisiana; The American Revolution, from the French and Indian War to the peace of 1783; and Establishing the United States of America, with the Articles, the Convention and the first ten amendments. Two more categories score skills: setting events in context, and judging sources and claims.
Colonial Louisiana in the questions
Seven questions are Louisiana's own: the founding of Natchitoches, the two treaties that moved the colony from France to Spain and back, the Code Noir, Governor O'Reilly, and the Acadians and Isleños who settled here.
Pair each treaty with what changed hands: Fontainebleau in 1762, Paris in 1763, Paris again in 1783, San Ildefonso in 1800.
Questions and answers
Do 6th graders take a LEAP social studies test?
Yes, in 2026-2027. The state's guide says grade 6 is then dropped: starting in 2027-2028 social studies is tested in grades 3, 5 and 8, and the grade 8 test reaches back to grade 6 content.
How many sessions is the grade 6 social studies test?
Three, of 65 minutes each, 195 minutes in all. Across them the guide describes roughly 5 to 7 item sets or tasks and 12 to 16 standalone items. A task ends in an extended written response.
Does the real test use sources?
Yes. Item sets and tasks are built on one to five related sources, such as adapted excerpts, maps, charts, timelines and lists of events, with three to six questions each. The questions on this page are in words only.
