The real tests: Florida FAST, grade 6
Subjects in grade 6
Mathematics and ELA reading, each given three times a year: at the start (PM1), the middle (PM2) and the end (PM3). B.E.S.T. Writing is a separate spring test.
Mathematics
36 to 40 items. Up to 100 minutes for PM1 and PM2 and up to 120 minutes for PM3.
ELA reading
36 to 40 items, plus about 5 field test items on PM3. Up to 90 minutes for PM1 and PM2 and up to 120 minutes for PM3.
Calculator
An online four-function calculator is provided for grade 6 mathematics, and a handheld one may be used. A reference sheet is in the testing platform.
How it is given
On a computer, in a single session on a single day. The tests are computer-adaptive: the questions get harder or easier with the student's answers.
Scores
Five achievement levels. Level 3, On Grade Level, begins at 229 in mathematics (scale 168 to 287) and at 225 in ELA reading (scale 161 to 284).

What the grade 6 blueprints weigh
In mathematics, Number Sense and Operations leads at 33 to 42 percent: negative numbers, absolute value, decimals, fractions, factors and exponents. Algebraic Reasoning (expressions, one-step equations, ratios, rates and percent) and the geometry and data category each take 25 to 36 percent. In reading, prose and poetry and informational text each take 25 to 35 percent, and reading across genres with vocabulary 35 to 50.
How the answers are checked
Each math answer is arithmetic on the numbers in the question, worked out a second time. Each reading question names the Florida benchmark it practices, and its terms are the ones defined in the state's standards. The poetic forms and three word meanings were checked in the sources named under those answers.
The reading questions name two poetic forms, the sonnet and the villanelle. Those are the two that Florida's grade 6 standards list.
Florida's reading standards use the terms logos, ethos and pathos for the three appeals. Learn all three.
Questions and answers
Is the FSA still given in 6th grade?
No. In March 2022 Florida law replaced the grade-level FSA in English language arts and mathematics with FAST, the Florida Assessment of Student Thinking, first given in the 2022-23 school year.
How many questions are on the 6th grade FAST?
The state's test design summaries give 36 to 40 items for grade 6 mathematics and 36 to 40 for ELA reading. The end-of-year test also carries about 5 field test items that are not scored.
How long is the 6th grade FAST test?
Mathematics takes up to 100 minutes on the first two tests of the year and up to 120 on the third. Reading takes up to 90 minutes, then up to 120. Students still working may continue until the school day ends.
Can you use a calculator on the 6th grade FAST math test?
Yes. An online four-function calculator is provided for grade 6 mathematics, and a handheld four-function calculator may be used. The state notes that not every item requires one.
What is a good score on the 6th grade FAST?
Florida reports five achievement levels. Level 3, On Grade Level, begins at 229 in mathematics and 225 in ELA reading. A percent right on this page is not a scale score and cannot predict a level.
