The real tests: what Florida publishes

What replaced the FSA
FAST, the Florida Assessment of Student Thinking, first given in the 2022-23 school year.
Subjects
ELA reading in grades 3 to 10 and mathematics in grades 3 to 8. Each is given three times a year: PM1 at the start, PM2 in the middle and PM3 at the end.
ELA reading
36 to 40 items, plus about 5 field-test items on PM3. 90 minutes for PM1 and PM2 and 120 minutes for PM3.
Mathematics
35 to 40 items in grades 3 to 5 and 36 to 40 in grades 6 to 8. Grades 3 to 5: 80 minutes for PM1 and PM2, 100 for PM3. Grades 6 to 8: 100 minutes, then 120.
How it is given
On a computer, in one session in one day. The tests are computer-adaptive: item difficulty adjusts to how the student responds.
Scores
Five achievement levels, with Level 3 meaning On Grade Level. PM1 and PM2 are for information only; PM3 gives the end-of-year score.

Checked October 7, 2026 against the 2026-27 FAST fact sheet for grades 3 to 10 (August 2026), the two FAST test design summaries and the Statewide Assessments Guide of the Florida Department of Education. Rules change, so confirm with the agency itself before your test.

How it works

Florida law replaced the Florida Standards Assessments with FAST in 2022. This unofficial test prep page has a short practice set for each grade from 3 to 10. Every question is our own. Not affiliated with the Florida Department of Education.

Read the full guide

What is in each grade's set

Grades 3 to 8 have five math questions, at least one from each reporting category of that grade's blueprint, and five reading questions. Grades 9 and 10 have six reading questions, because Florida gives FAST mathematics only through grade 8. The reading questions use short passages and poems written for this page, since the real test's long passages cannot be copied.

How the answers are checked

Each question names the Florida benchmark it practices. The math answers are worked out again from the numbers in the question. Word meanings and figures of speech rest on a dictionary named under the answer.

Questions and answers

What replaced the FSA?

FAST, the Florida Assessment of Student Thinking. The state's assessments guide dates the change to legislation signed in March 2022, and FAST was given for the first time in the 2022-23 school year.

Which grades take the FAST test?

ELA reading in grades 3 to 10 and mathematics in grades 3 to 8, each three times a year: PM1, PM2 and PM3. FAST is also given from VPK to grade 2; kindergarten to grade 2 has its own fact sheet.

How many questions are on the FAST test?

Reading has 36 to 40 items in every grade, and its end-of-year test adds about five field-test items. Mathematics has 35 to 40 items in grades 3 to 5 and 36 to 40 in grades 6 to 8.

Can I print an FSA practice test as a PDF?

Yes. Finish a grade's set and choose Print: the questions come out as a sheet, with an answer key if you want one. Save as PDF in the print window keeps a file.
