How it works

These 48 eighth grade math questions follow the grade 8 FAST blueprint category by category, and all are our own. Unofficial practice, not affiliated with the Florida Department of Education.

The four categories on the blueprint

Number Sense and Operations and Probability, 22 to 28% of the test: irrational numbers, exponents, scientific notation and repeated experiments. Algebraic Reasoning, 22 to 28%: equivalent expressions, multi-step equations and inequalities, and systems. Linear Relationships, Data Analysis, and Functions, 25 to 31%: slope, linear equations, functions and scatter plots. Geometric Reasoning, 22 to 28%: the Pythagorean Theorem, angles, transformations and similar triangles.

A mini test in each category

Each category here holds 11 to 13 questions, enough for a mini practice test on one part of the blueprint. The line under every answer names the B.E.S.T. benchmark it practices, such as MA.8.AR.2.1, so a missed question points to one skill.

  • Know the Pythagorean Theorem by heart. The standards expect it memorized and do not expect the distance formula.
  • An equation like x² = 49 has two real solutions, 7 and −7. An equation like x³ = −8 has one, −2.

Questions and answers

Is the FSA still given in 8th grade?

No. Legislation signed in March 2022 replaced the grade-level FSA in mathematics and English language arts with FAST, the Florida Assessment of Student Thinking, first given in the 2022-23 school year. Eighth graders take it three times a year.

Is there a no-calculator part on the 8th grade Florida math test?

Not on FAST. The blueprint marks the grade 8 benchmarks calculator available, and an online scientific calculator is in the testing platform. The state’s policy adds that not every item will need one.

How many questions are on the 8th grade FAST math test?

The blueprint gives 36 to 40 items. The session is 100 minutes for the first two tests of the year and 120 minutes for the third, which is longer because it carries field-test items.

What is a passing score on 8th grade FAST math?

Grade 8 mathematics scores run from 183 to 291 in five achievement levels. Level 3, On Grade Level, is 244 to 253. A percent right on this page is not a scale score.

What is the end-of-grade math test for 8th grade in Florida?

The third FAST test of the year, PM3, which gives the summative score and is used for school accountability. Algebra 1 and Geometry have separate end-of-course tests.
