What the 8th grade math MCAS covers
The state's test design gives grade 8 four reporting categories. The Number System and Expressions and Equations, counted together, is 40 percent: irrational numbers, exponents, scientific notation, slope, linear equations and systems. Geometry is 30 percent: transformations, congruence and similarity, angle facts, the Pythagorean Theorem and the volume of cones. Functions is 20 percent: rate of change, initial value and reading graphs. Statistics and Probability, 10 percent, is scatter plots, lines of fit and two-way tables.
Standards under each answer
Each answer names the grade 8 standard it practices in the 2017 Massachusetts framework: 8.G.B.7 for a Pythagorean Theorem problem, for example.
Session 1 allows no calculator, so practice the exponent, square root and equation questions by hand.
Questions and answers
How many questions are on the 8th grade math MCAS?
Forty questions count, for 54 points: 34 one-point questions, 2 two-point questions and 4 constructed-response questions at four points each. Students also answer 8 field-test or equating questions that are not scored.
Can you use a calculator on the MCAS math grade 8 test?
Only in Session 2. For grades 7 and 8 the test design allows no calculator in Session 1 and allows calculators in Session 2.
What kinds of questions are on the grade 8 math MCAS?
Multiple choice, multiple select, technology enhanced, short answer and constructed response. A constructed-response question has several parts with calculations and explanations and is worth four points. Every question on this page is multiple choice.
How is the 8th grade math MCAS scored?
Results are one of four achievement levels: Exceeding, Meeting, Partially Meeting or Not Meeting Expectations. The department's test design gives no percent to pass, so a percent here is practice only.
Where are the state's own grade 8 math MCAS practice tests?
The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education posts released questions on its MCAS pages and sends students to the MCAS Resource Center for practice tests. Nothing here is taken from either: these 40 questions are separate practice in the same reporting categories.
